I have trouble choosing sides on this topic. The only way to truly be successful if you live in America is to speak English. Or at least that's the way I see it. You go to a country and you learn the language (yes I know English is not the official language, but it sure helps!) People who go to other countries are expected to learn the language to get ahead, and they do. Yes it takes time to learn English, learning is a process. Wouldn't you think that to be successful in Spain, you would learn Spanish?
Now the other side. I think places that want to become or are already English only should teach their employees English. And I think it is ridiculous that their language be banned. Because like we talked about in class, some things are just said more comfortable in their native language. In the sephora case, they relied on them to sell to their Spanish speaking customers, but they didn't allow them to speak it behind closed doors to each other. I think that is quite hypocritical, and uncalled for. If an employer is highly offended, teach them English.
You make some good observations here. As you point out, knowing the most commonly spoken language in a given country does truly impact one's success, however learning is a PROCESS. We can't simply expect people to learn overnight, and as you say, perhaps we need to provide more services to people who are trying to learn English.
