Persepolis I

The comic book Persepolis was dealing with political, historical events of Iran society after Islamic revolution, during Iran and Iraq war, it was a personal childhood story of Satrapi herself. Satrapi does an excellent job giving us a strong impression, not negative, of normal Islam family. Looking back of her unforgettable time, I could not stop thinking about the time when Korea conquered by Japan. Similar to Islamic revolution which is sudden requirement to wear the veil, Korea also had a hard time dealing with Japan controlled power over our culture like clothing, languages when they won the war. Because it was only sixty year ago when we found our freedom, I thanked God that made me born in such peaceful time. In current news in Korea, all they talked about was the terror act of North Korea performed against South Korea, and it was a huge issue for a month because it deals with whether there is going to be another war or not. I was sort of worried at first, because my family and friends live there, however, that issue was not came as a big threat to me because I was always think as it is not going to affect me and my life. However my reaction toward war changed when I read this comic book with great interest.

The revolution changed many things in Marjane’s life. Watching people dies every day, living in a fear of war, bombing and chances of death clearly cruel for a little girl in her adolescent. It was not only changed her relationship with God, but because of that, her personality changed a lot. One thing made me admire her was her strong will and fearless behavior to what she thinks injustice. Because I heard history of Korea many times since I was young, it reminds me the harsh time of Korea that I mentioned above. In our history, whoever against the Japanese rule, they were punished and they easily lost their life, and I was worried Marjane because she was a brave and free-spirited girl who has unstoppable interest towards prohibited things such as rock music, Michael Jackson, denim jacket. Overall, I loved this book because it gave me some time to think of my country and its history as well as Iran’s.
