I found it especially heartfelt and heartbreaking how Derek changed while in prison. Not many people can change that dramatically, and I'm so happy he did. He is a good man, and he was setting a bad example for his brother.
There were a lot of parallels in the movie to topics in class, like racism, affirmative action, stereotyping, etc. My favorite parallel however was how it didn't matter the social class of the person, there was still so much hate, and it just goes to show that hate knows no boundaries.
Its hard to watch a family member close to you die and you want to blame it on someone, and Derek chose to blame it on other races. I find this to be a common practice in society today, and a horrible one.
This movie made me feel so sad. Sad for the people being hated, but sad for Derek, Dannie, and all of their skinhead friends, because they don't know what its like to not feel all that hate. It's a crippling emotion, and that Derek found peace when he got out of prison was awesome. The ending made me mad... I'm just gonna leave it at that.
