Secondly, the fact that she makes the present color and all the flashback, her memories black and white. I believe it mainly depicts the fact that all her memories involve different emotions attached to it, but in the end they were hard times for her. Thus depicting them in white and black shows that her past was so filled with so many emotions and now when she is finally in France in the end her actually so called normal life starts. Then the whole scene where music cds were being sold like drugs, creates a whole feeling of thrill and tension comparing it to the thrill and risk in buying drugs in a street in america for example.
Then the character of grandma especially, was one that anyone would attach to. Just not because she has been depicted as the only elderly person in the movie who bonds with Marji, but also a lady with more experiences and a person who takes on situations more broad mindedly.
The dialogue in the end, "i pick jasmine every morning, so that i shall smell good everyday", i suppose that this did had a deeper meaning to it which is why she has repeated the same thing twice. I think she calls the jasmine flowers as good deeds, like being honest to yourself being an example, and treat every day as a new day.
So basically if we be honest to ourself and be good to others and fight for the right everyday as it comes, we would "smell" good saying who doesnt want to be a person with integrity and values.
