What drives stereotypes is not a secret at all. It if often times generalizations from the Media and society as a whole. They come about in all forms whether it is in reference to genders, sex, race, age, or any other societal platform. Snyder was able to observe something unique about stereotypes that we have not talked too much about in class until this point. That is the EFFECT it has on people. Often times we find ourselves asking would we treat this person differently if there was a change in the way they looked, or even their culture. The effect of stereotypes is one that is quite prevalent in society and affects everyone on different levels.
The study that Snyder did on how men treated women based on looks struck me as no surprise at all. The average man would be guilty of treating a woman differently if she is more “ascetically” pleasing. To me this can pose a problem in the workplace or anywhere else for that matter. Say there are two women being interviewed by a man for a position in a company. It is no secret that a man could be In fact guilty of seeing past a more attractive woman’s shortcomings in order to higher her over someone that may not be as attractive. Should there be a woman present at the interview to oversee that such activity does not occur. Here in lies the issue is there any way to successfully combat this type of controversy. To me I don’t know that this is true and that the kind of world that we live in today promotes physical appearance way to much for this not to be an issue.
