After watching the Movie Persepolis, I can see that it is completely different from the novel. If I had not read the novel first I fear that a majority of the emotion and morals throughout the book would have been lost. While it is understandable why the movie was shortened and certain details changed, I have a feeling of disappointment because the movie made light of many situations that could help many people in their daily life. The entire section of her drug use is downplayed in the novel. Not only would it be beneficial to show people the danger of drug use but her feelings about drugs and how they changed were very important to her development in to the person she eventually becomes.
Another major flaw in the movie is the “eye of the tiger” scene of her getting her life back together and organized. While it was hilarious it takes away from the seriousness of her attempted suicide. Without reading the novel no major emphasis is shown on her deep depression and the events leading up to it. People battle depression everyday and to poke fun at it seems inappropriate. I enjoyed watching the film but there was so much more that they could have done with it.
