All four of my grandparents came to America via Ellis Island. On my fifth grade field trip, i saw my grandma and great grandparents name on the big wall. It was pretty cool to know that people can come to America and start a better life. My maternal side from Norway and my paternal side from Malta. My maternal great grandparents were told that America is the land of gold, when they got there is was the great depression, surprise! My paternal grandparents came from Malta during WWII, it was the most heavily bombed place in Europe during the war (at least that's what my grandpa told me, maybe it was just the Mediterranean). Needless to say, it was easy for my grandparents to come to America. My grandma told me, and I see it in the reading, that It is now harder for the so called white Europeans to come to America. She thinks it's ridiculous, I think it's her old fashioned ways.
How can they tell how many illegal immigrants come into the country, who is going to answer when someone asks them, are you legally in the united states. Numbers collected by the census , I do not trust. Who is going to report a household with 30 illegal immigrants in it, no one. I'm glad they mention security issues (although briefly). Because obviously not everyone from middle eastern dissent is a terrorist, they need to figure out a better way to screen people.
I think it is a great opportunity for people from other countries to come to America and make the most of what they are given and can obtain. This might be my white privilege talking but I do believe you Can get anywhere with hard work. For some it might be harder, but if you really want something, you can achieve it.
