Racial Draft

Evelyn Alsultany's article "Los Intersticios: Recasting Moving Selves" was one I found particularly interesting this week. Being a mixed child myself I get pulled in by my moms family and by my dads family. My dads family brings up qualities they have, that I have and say its good. Then they condemn others and blame then on my moms genes. This makes it hard for me to associate myself with just one side. Do any of you have problems like this?

This article also reminded me of something I saw on tv before. Its a skit from the Dave Chappelle show.

It kind of reminded me of this article a lot. Being pulled toward one side or another. Its like everyone has to make a choice. Which is why I agree that there should be a better way of handling this so that you don't have to pick one or the other.
I also found the census issue interesting because this year I had to fill out the census form. I remember being confused about what to fill in when it asked me race. I just ended up putting other and wrote "martian"'

  1. It seems as though "moving selves" are far more common than what we typically acknowledge in the U.S.

I love that you wrote "martian" on your census. It just goes to show that all of these categories/ways we come up with to describe race are never going to reflect reality 100 percent because race is a human invention!
