La Haine - The Story of the Struggle

The movie ' La Haine - Hate' that we watched in class, expressed the discrimination that not only the people of color but white race is experiencing in France. Four years a go there was an uprising in France. French immigrants were claiming that they were experiencing discrimination by the police forces. Nicolas Sarkozy, current president of France, gave an unlucky speech "If they don't like the way they live, they more than welcome to go back to Africa" which should not be said by a president. I guess the movie La Haine takes place in the same time period. Three main characters, Vinz, Hubert and Said were living in ghettos in France. Movie is really interesting because it combines lives of three different people, which are belong to different races but struggling for the same cause.

Not only the struggle that main characters having but graffiti signs and break dances were really interesting in this movie. I think graffiti signs and break dances are symbols of anarchy or struggle. As we discussed in class, because of the lack of opportunity, very talented break dancers were dancing in the parking lot by themselves even they could be very famous. Even more interesting thing was when they go to Art Galleria they were bored because they were not able to understand the paintings and they could not talk to girls in appropriate way which are the signs of exclusion of them from society.

On the other hand, they both wanted justice for their friend Abdel, who was staying at the hospital after harmed by the police forces. They had their own definitions of justice but unlike Said and Hubert, Vinz was believing that he needed to kill cops who were responsible for that and he was in need of getting some respect on street. But I believe violence brings nothing more than violence.

End of the movie was even more shocking. Two opposite characters, Vinz and Hubert, switched characters. When Vinz understood that he was not capable of killing someone, he decided to give his gun to Hubert. This is a sign that Vinz's point of view about the revenge was changed. But after his accidental murder by the cops, Hubert's point of view of revenge changed also and he pointed his gun to the officer. It wasn't shown in movie if Hubert shoot the officer or get killed. I do not think it will make any difference because in both cases he is in big trouble.

There were some details about the movie such as Hubert's story about the guy falling down from a sky scraper. In Hubert's story, a guy was saying 'so far so good' when he was falling down from a sky scraper. In my opinion, he meant that it is obvious to get killed when you throw yourself from a skyscraper even you think that nothing is going to happen if the fall is 'so far so good'. Applying Hubert's story to Vinz's life, it is unavoidable to get in trouble or get hurt even he thinks that he is going to be fine.
