In June 17, 2003 , famous clothing brand Abercrombie and Fitch was sued for racial discrimination, accused of favoring whites for its sales floor jobs and charged around $50 million for discriminating Asians, Hispanics and African Americans. In its hiring the brand seeks what company called ' classic American' which suppose to be white Americans for the company.
Not only this but British woman, Riam Dean sued Abercrombie for firing her because of her prosthetic arm was against the company's so called "look policy". I do not think that if you like the product, you won't care about if the sales person is not attractive or handicapped. Personally, I am not against if company wants to hire attractive people for their advertisement but what Abercrombie did was discriminatory and even racial.
As mentioned in class, Abercrombie was a hunting sports company and became one of the most famous clothing companies in its style. But if they are hiring people any other than whites it can even effect the revenue of the company because it might be seemed as they are not designing cloths for people who are not white. That is why I think it is obvious that they are not even feeling guilty to be seemed as discriminatory.
To tell the truth, I shop from Abercrombie but I was not aware of their discriminatory acts before. I did not think about it before but know I realize that I never saw a Hispanic or Asian sales person in their shops.
I like the title that you have chosen for this post. Has the information you have read/found at all made you consider where or not you will shop at Abercrombie in the future?
