A and Fitch

As we were discussing about Abercrombie and Fitch in class. I did some research about the past news of Abercrombie and Fitch . I happened to find a story of a 19 -year-old Muslim college student who wanted to work for Abercrombie and Fitch. However according to Abercrombie and Fitch clothing policies , someone who wear a hijab (headscarf that Muslim women has to wear ) cant work at Abercrombie and Fitch stores. She applied for a job at Abercrombie and Fitch and they refused to hire 19 year-old Muslim college teen because of her hijab. After a while she sued the company.

Now first of all everyone has a right to practice whatever they see fit in their personal life but in my opinion that should not affect their career. I found her attitude wrong about suing the company because if someone else were to apply a job at mosque , they would probably not hire anyone who just applies for the job because they are not Muslim and i do not think that should be called "discrimination". I might be wrong but a clothing store is supposed to have every right to rule what their employee wears when they are working because this is the exact business that they are doing.

For example if i were to apply for a job at Abercrombie and Fitch and was dressed like dervish people, i would not be hired at Abercrombie and Fitch but it would not be because Abercrombie and Fitch is discriminating against dervishes. it would be because it does not fit the Abercrombie and Fitch's look in the business. I am not sure if she won the case but if she did that would not be fair.

  1. Interesting example. Would this be an example of discrimination on the basis of religion--that in order to practice a certain religion sometimes individuals must dress/look a certain way?
