The Where’s Waldo of identity

I found that the concept of moving self to be true. I am of Filipino decent. My native language is a blend of Spanish and the original language. When my family is overheard speaking some people believe we are Spanish based off some similar Spanish verbs that are used. At other times my appearance makes others believe I am Chinese or of some Asian country. When I am hanging out with my friends they would tease me and say that I am really a tan white guy because I act more like my white friends. It seems impossible to find a consensus on what I am. Like Alsultany I run into instances on my appearance will cause an Asian man to stark talking in a foreign language to me or another person will speak Spanish to me based off my last name Domingo.
There is much truth in having an identity fracture and having different meanings in different places. The movie La Haine shows that class also became an identity fracture. Like in La Haine, if you were poor that became the main identity for a person. The drug dealer snoopy had an apartment in the suburbs because he had money, although he did appear odd, the money snoopy had; let him stay in such a neighborhood. Therefore money gave snoopy a higher class which allowed him to live in the suburbs, so money equal class. The main characters of the movie spent much of their time doing nothing because they had no money or any means of getting anywhere in life. When the main characters were in the nice neighborhood initially the cops treated them differently. This contrasted the hostility expressed against the main character when they were in the poor neighborhood. So identity fracture occurs both based off appearance, class, and location. The concept of the moving self is a true fact of life.

  1. I find Alsultany's idea of the "moving self" to be very intellectually stimulating, and am glad that you found it useful to connect to both La Haine and your own personal experiences. You are right to point out that identity based on class can also create a moving self.
