Sexism in Past

As it mentioned in Pharr's article, patriarchy, men's dominance over women, occurs by the three main 'disadvantages' caused by environment. Economics, violence, and homophobia. If we take look at the society in U.S. after World War 2, we could say that women were stronger than present because women gained their economic independence when men went to war. Also divorce rate had peaked after the World War 2 which proves that women decided who they want to live with.

Sexism is caused by the taboos established in the history. As an example, i was always wondering why human being referred as 'mankind'. In past power was one's muscle strength or capability so stronger was able to dominate or manipulate others. So men dominance over women is another fact that caused by old bad habits.

Homophobia is another taboo that people feared. In the movie 'Fire' that we watched in class, we witnessed that even a person like Radha's husband, who is trying to be a better person, might react and be violent. In my opinion, as long as we cannot stop violence we won’t be able to stop not only sexism, but racism and discrimination.
