All this hype about Tyson next to a horse. Please how many normal people thought 'oh my goodness he is being compared to an animal, that's racist!!!'. I think most people thought 'damn, he's so hot' or something along those lines.
To play devils advocate (as I'm sure you've guessed by now I love to do) is the Polo add featuring Tyson Beckford an example of Omi and Winant's racial "common sense"? While many of us upon initially observing this image may think little of it, is a deeper meaning revealed if we take some of the concepts about race and gender we have learned in class and apply them to the image? Does the idea of racial common sense keep us from thinking critically about these types of representations? Just some food for thought.
