Patriarchy and sexism

From the discussion about oppression, patriarchy, and sexism on Wednesday class, I think they are existing everywhere in our normal life but not so noticeable. Back in the old time, when men are the one who go out and make the money, while women always stay at home to take care of the house and children but nowadays we can see that women are out there to work and support their family. Nowadays our society has changed a little, we looks at one's ability rather than gender but there are still some position that men are preferred than women such high ranking in military or political.

As Pharr states that, "We have to look at economics not only as the root cause of sexism but also as the underlying, driving force that keeps all the oppressions in place". From my perspective, I agree with this statement because majority of successful entrepreneurs are men and most of the incomes for the family come from men so we kind of have to give them credit and respect for what they do. Not all men as a whole but those who working hard to earn it. As time goes by, I believe women will prove themselves to the society and become equally to men, until then I think there are still oppression, patriarchy and sexism in society.

  1. I think you are correct in observing that sexism persists within our society but it is not as obvious and is harder to detect than it was in the past.
