La Haine

Film La Haine was really interesting for me to watch. I thought the movie was very strong and seemed really realistic. I also thought the movie had a very unexpected plot, and not so cliche. I realized the movie had a very deeper meaning and explanations than it was showed after having some discussions in class. Things that i didn't realize until the discussion was the three main characters being a different race. Even though I knew about it because Jeffry told us before viewing the movie, I didn't think much about them being "different" because they were best friends and no racial comments were made throughout the movie. As i was watching, it made me think about if there was any other people in that situation going through the same situations. Like if there was another movie on same settings but on different people (maybe like the polices point of view).
I also found the viewing of hip hop culture was interesting, like graffiti which was viewed a lot in the film, breakdancing and DJing. These elements of expression was originally made to promote peace instead of violence, however in the film, most of it seemed to promote hatred towards the police.

Towards the ending scene, when Vinz gave the gun to Hubert, it reminded of how I would be so caught up on something all day, but at the end of the day when i think back to it, it seems really stupid. And also reminded me of "it does not matter how you fall, but how you land" because things were going "all right" for Vinz, Hubert and Said until at the end of the scene, Vinz gets shot. I thought it was just like "so far so good, so far so good.." thing in the movie and the landing for them wasn't quite as good. The whole movie and the discussion in class was really interesting to me and I thought some parts were kind of applicable to me.

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. You make some great observations about hip hop culture and the film's ending, which does mirror Hubert's story about the falling man.
