'La Haine'

In France, there are only two citizenships are exist, which are National and Foreigner and the overall movie was about the hatred of immigrants toward the local. There were three different races and three very different characters being friends and cover up for each other in the film ‘La Haine’. This amazed me at first, however when I looked deep inside, I found it absolutely possible because they are facing a huge visible common issue, which is as an immigrants they were ignorants, beaten by the French police because of causing riots and violence to break out. The French government pushed the immigrants to suburbs, neglecting them on their education, housing and job so the immigrants in this movie only could express their talent, their thoughts by music and dancing and graffiti. There were many events happened in just 24 hours, to change the character’s thought as we discussed in class.

The movie was very well made to draw me attention, because I found it very interesting shot in black and white. I think this is probably a director’s idea to make the audience not to care so much about the view of Paris, but to think only about the political message of the movie. It gave us a big lesson, when we realized that the gun which Hubert and the policeman are pointing at each other’s face, were both police’s gun. This is a message of when you hate someone and use violence, the hatred never going to stop but will become worse. The movie ended with left us a frustration and curiousness of what might happened after the gun sound. This movie cannot be concluded, because in this very moment, foreigners and nationals are still fighting and expressing their hatred toward each other in France.

  1. Great observations on the film. You do a good job of explaining why it is that the three main characters are friends though they are from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. I particularly like your observation as to why the film may have been shot in black and white--that is, to de-emphasize the setting of Paris and to make the action of the film more accessible and universal for the viewer.
