La Haine

"Its not about how you fall but its about how you land".
This powerful dialogue I believe is basically the main theme of the movie. The movie opened with showing three friends and their life in that one particular day after the riot. I want to talk about the characters of the three friends. Even though they lived in the ghetto and had no ettiquettes and manners they knew the facts about life and had lived the life hard way.
The main character I could relate to was Hubert. A guy who would always think practically and would not take extreme decisions without thinking on it. He would not at all try to fight first but would want to talk and clear things out. But then Vinz on the other hand, I believe had more issues compared to his friends. I could totally understand his frustration with the system, about being a "foreigner", as he could understand what could have happened to his friend abdel. Similarly Hubert hated spics and also wanted to shoot that cop who was a spic. But can anyone help me understand, like in the movie he told Vinz that a cop dead is just another cop dead, it doesnt make any difference in the system, why did he want him to shoot that spic officer.
In a society like America these kind of frustrations to which a normal citizen can do nothing is more apt in the citizens here because america is a country which consists or almost every race in the world. Here people should be more apt to passing racist comments and racist profiling.
In the end the director leaves it to us to decide whether Hubert does kill the officer without caring about his own life, or probably he doesnt.
But it is definitely true, that its not about how you fall but its about how you land.
Even the though they were "malices of the ghetto", if they are good at heart and honest to themselves who the hell cares.

  1. To me, it seemed as though Hubert disliked the officer whom you mention in your post because of his behavior toward the three friends--in that he pretended to be on their side or looking out for them, while ultimately he conformed to the larger agenda and beliefs of the police. Hubert may have seen him as a traitor because he is a person of color working for the police.
