I love how Peggy McIntosh is a woman's studies specialist and yet she can instantly change her subject. I don't mean to sound dumb but she must be a smart lady. I'm not so sure I agree with number 7 on her list "I can be sure that my children will be given curricular materials that testify to the existence of their race." Or even if I understand it. I think most history books include black people with accomplishments, well that's what I learned anyway, I learned about women accomplishments also. But I do recall that they blew it out of proportion saying that women didn't do much. I don't agree with number 12 either. So called "white trash" do that too, and they don't speak for the white people as a whole. I know I don't judge a whole race or population of people based on one single person, that's just ignorant, no two people are the same not can they be judged the same.
I highly agree with number 19, racial profiling. It happens with police sometimes and it's upsetting to me. I feel very privileged that I am a young white female, I have never been pulled over(I am a good driver, watch now I'm gonna get a ticket now that I said that).
All these things we take for granted, I like how she has the guts to put them on paper. I wish I had the guts to speak my opinion. I never speak my opinion for fear I will be rejected or people will not like me anymore. I just keep my mouth shut and listen, I learn a lot that way. I need to find my voice and I hope that this class can help me on my way to speaking up.
She is a smart woman! = )
ReplyDeleteIn regards to number 7 on her list, I think she is referencing the fact that most textbooks for children and middle and high school age students tend to focus upon the experiences of white ethnics. If the experiences of people of color or women are included, it is only briefly.
One of my favorite writers, Audre Lorde, once said: "It is not our differences that divide us, but our silences surrounding those differences." Therefore, you shouldn't be afraid to speak up, as your voice will have a positive impact in the world!
