Discrimination

I find discrimination very harsh and ridiculous. Discrimination is practiced everywhere based on the persons race, sex, religion, appearance or anything in that matter. Whether to accept or reject someone because of these things only creates racism and hatred. The society has problem with accepting everyone equally, for example the Abercrombie company recently getting sued for discrimination against different race, colors. The Abercrombie store hires the perfect white man and women as their models or even employees, to make it almost seem like "these clothes will make you look perfect like them". I can understand that it is still a clothing store, and they advertise "looking good", however there is no need for discrimination, I see it as false advertisement. If doing these things were for money, instead of making and promoting styles, I find it even more pathetic that these things are happening in stores in the malls we go to.

Also, discrimination due to multiple languages spoken in the work place has been a problem in the society. I have many friends that works in restaurants with different races, and I hear a lot about miscommunication between them, for example between the chefs and waiters. I feel it is difficult to work in these environment, but also I am not sure what would be the right thing to do in these situations. Individual Discrimination happens in everyday life and sometimes it happens even unintentionally (244) because people nowadays are so used to seeing different colors and just know it as "common sense", as mentioned in Omi and Winant's article.
"Whether conscious or not, open or hidden, desired or undesired, these acts build on and support prejudicial stereotypes" (245) I have to say this is true, discrimination is only hurting each other and doesn't prove anything about who gets more privileges. Even though Whites are still viewed as the majority, but America is composed of so many different race and culture, it is hard to say who exactly are the majority in the country.
