Discrimination

Being an international student, it really amazed me that there were still some cases, infact many cases about discrimination in the united states. During my freshmen year I did feel kinda left out in a country which was not my own. But then cases on such a high level was never I imagined.
I would like to ask you all as to why this is happening.

United states being a nation with many races, basically is the combination of all races. Why is it still that "white" is considered the ultimate power. If we look into the historical events, white would mean to you mostly british or people from UK, who were and still called english.
Why is that US is so proud of being white. It is mainly combined of all races and should be proud of the fact. After getting a black president Im aware what has he done to prevent this, but earlier this has happened. Lets talk about the Abercrombie and Fitch case. Why would they even just hire so called white people. Just because they are fair and can speak better english. Just FYI, even in india english is that first language then comes hindi, which is the native language. The parliament of india speaks english during their meetings. Anyways, so basically i feel the problem is the accent, to which i definitely agree. As discussed in class when I had a prof. or TA who had a weird accent I would never attend that class because i know i would not understand anything.

Then why is that abercrombie would discriminate. I believe they design clothes in such a manner that they keep the white skin in mind, mainly designing clothes for people who are fair skinned. Then what can be done to stop this from happening in other companies. I suggest that people, who are white of course, having the white privilege, should be more supportive to people who are not white and instead of cursing them and thinking they are inferior, try to treat them as guests in your nation. Well, atleast thats what we indians were told, guests are like gods.
Well I know i might sound a bit straight forward and trying to remove my frustration about some incident, but no, these are facts, and I would like opinions of you guys too!

  1. It is interesting how the image of America does not necessarily reflect the reality. Being confronted with so many examples of discrimination can be frustrating, but this is why we are in American Pluralism--to open our eyes and gain new perspectives. Acknowledging that discrimination still exists is the first step.
