Abercrombie and Fitch was recently charged with discrimination and had to pay $40 million to applicants who were denied employment due to their race. While I was unaware that this had happened, when I found out on Wednesday I was surprised to hear that a company this a common and popular was actually being forced to do something about their discrimination. Although it did not surprise that the company was Abercrombie. Just because of the image that the store puts out of perfect men and women, it does not surprise me that they discriminated in an attempt to have only white employees.
Unfortunately, I do not feel that just forcing the company to pay a large amount of money is going to get the point across and solve the problem. I just hope that, after this, more attention is paid to Abercrombie to prevent this problem from repeating itself. While I do not shop at Abercrombie I have to say that I would try to avoid the store a little more than I would have before. Although it would not necessarily stop me from entering the store and purchasing something I am interested in. This is because I feel that this is a much more common situation than we are aware of. If you shop at any of the similar popular chains, I am sure that they are guilty of the same thing...at least to a certain extent.
I'm glad the reading on Abercrombie has opened your eyes to the issue of discrimination that may be occurring at common stores that we pass by each day.
